Applied Academic Research

Turning promising academic research into real-world innovation

The NorthMed Applied Academic Research Program is designed to identify promising research within universities, colleges, hospitals, and research institutes and help transform it into technologies with practical, clinical, and commercial potential.

Many innovative discoveries remain within the academic environment because of the gap between scientific research and real-world application. NorthMed works together with researchers to bridge this gap by evaluating promising technologies, identifying their potential applications, and defining the steps required to advance them toward validation, product development, and commercialization.

As part of the program, the NorthMed team conducts an in-depth evaluation and due diligence process to identify projects with the strongest technological, clinical, and commercial potential. The process also helps identify gaps or areas that require further development, allowing promising projects to be strengthened and better positioned for their next stage.

Where relevant, NorthMed supports researchers in preparing applications for Applied Research funding programs of the Israel Innovation Authority and can participate as an industry-oriented partner accompanying the research and helping connect the academic technology with real market needs.

The program focuses on research with the potential to create new medical technologies, devices, diagnostics, digital health solutions, biomaterials, therapeutics, and other healthcare innovations. Projects are assessed based on technological novelty, unmet need, feasibility, intellectual property potential, and their ability to progress toward a meaningful real-world application.

By connecting academic excellence with industry, entrepreneurship, clinical needs, and commercialization expertise, NorthMed aims to create a stronger pipeline of technologies emerging from northern Israel and help promising research move beyond the laboratory toward solutions that can generate clinical, economic, and societal impact.
